Yale PBS3 British Standard High Security Escape Nightlatch
The Yale PBS3 Nightlatch is designed to replace rim latch locks, and is available with a 60mm backset (door edge to centre of cylinder) to upgrade standard nighlatches. Also available in 40mm backset PBS4 click here. Ideally suited to be fitted on solid doors, as the locks have been designed with an ergonomic non locking handle for emergency escape at all items (ideal for flats). The main lock bolt is automatically deadlocked when the door is closed, preventing the main bolt being retracted by a credit card, the inside handle operating the latch bolt at all times. The bolt can be held in the withdrawn position (only) with the use of the snib feature.

A challenging fit particularly for thicker doors
Fitting and troubleshooting was more difficult than it should be.
The information leaflet is lacking in a number of aspects:
1) no tolerance is given for key dimensions. It is particularly important to know for the length of the flat connecting bar (4mm +/- what?) Cut it too short and the lock is useless. Leave it too long and the backplate stands away from the door.
(2) paper template (supplied) should only be used to mark where the wood screws are supposed to be but not to pre-drill the holes for the wood screws. Instead once mounted in Step 11, the metal backplate can be used to check the intended position of the wood screws and facilitate pre-drilling holes for the 3 wood screws in Step 12. This is more reliable.
(3) having cut my door down to the stated maximum thickness of 57mm the supplied 45mm screws would not reach their intended threads in Step 11. The door had to be cut down to maximum 54mm thickness. Even then, 'finding' the screw threads by fishing blind at a length of 45mm is not easy. The supplied screws should have a reduced diameter run-in section to ease finding the thread and avid the risk of cross-threading due to slight misalignment.
(4) no troubleshooting is supplied with the guide. Specifically, after assembly if the key is stiff to turn and the latch does not spring back on its own then it is probably the case that the flat connecting bar has been left slightly too long. Unfortunately to cut it down to length you have to take the lock apart and off the door.
